Relationships and Sex Education

At St Wilfrid’s CE Primary School, we are committed to providing a well-rounded education that supports children’s personal development and prepares them for life in modern Britain. Relationships, Health, and Sex Education (RHSE) forms an important part of our curriculum and covers the following key areas:

Relationships Education

This focuses on helping children to:

  • Build positive and healthy relationships with friends, family members, and others.
  • Develop respect for others and understand the importance of kindness, empathy, and inclusion.
  • Understand online relationships and how to stay safe online.
  • Support their emotional and mental wellbeing.
  • Recognise how to stay safe in different situations.

Sex Education

This covers topics such as relationships and health, including puberty and the changes children experience as they grow.

  • Please note: Sex Education is not compulsory in primary schools. Parents have the right to withdraw their child from these sessions.

Health Education

This teaches pupils about the characteristics of good physical health and mental wellbeing, including:

  • The importance of healthy eating and exercise.
  • How to maintain good hygiene.
  • Strategies for managing emotions and stress.
  • Staying safe both online and offline.

Our Curriculum: SCARF (Safety, Caring, Achievement, Resilience, Friendship)

At St Wilfrid's, we use the SCARF curriculum, provided by Coram Life Education, to deliver age-appropriate and engaging lessons in Relationships, Health, and Sex Education.

SCARF covers all the statutory requirements set by the Government and provides a consistent framework to support pupils' personal, social, and emotional development. It helps children develop the knowledge, understanding, and life skills they need to keep themselves safe and healthy, both now and in the future.

Parent and Carer Consultations

As part of the statutory requirements for teaching Relationships and Sex Education (RSE), we are required to consult with parents and carers about our policy and curriculum.

At St Wilfrid's, we conducted parent/carer consultations when we first introduced the statutory requirements and when we reviewed and updated our scheme of work.

We greatly appreciate the feedback received during these consultations, which helped shape the curriculum we now deliver.
