Physical Education

Intent

At St Wilfrid's, we aim to provide all pupils with a range of activities that inspire them to lead physically active lives. Our intent is to develop students' physical skills while promoting their health, fitness, self-confidence, and social development. We strive to ensure that physical activity becomes a key component of a healthy lifestyle and is linked to positive mental health and wellbeing. We want children to be physically confident, resilient, and motivated to continue engaging in physical activity throughout their lives. The PE curriculum aims to support children’s growth into lifelong learners who understand the importance of physical health, social collaboration, and sportsmanship.

Implementation

Curriculum Structure:
We offer a broad curriculum of physical activities, both within lesson time and outside it, providing fun and engaging opportunities. The curriculum is designed to build knowledge and skills sequentially as children progress through the school, with a focus on a variety of sports. Teachers have the flexibility to deliver lessons that are suited to the needs of the children, helping them develop competence and confidence. We aim to make links across the curriculum, encouraging children to apply their learning in PE to other subjects and broader aspects of life. Additionally, we strive to establish connections with the local community to enhance our PE provision.

Teaching & Learning:
Our PE lessons focus on providing high-quality teaching and learning opportunities, ensuring that all children, regardless of ability, are supported to achieve their personal best. Children engage in competitive sports where they learn teamwork, cooperation, and the importance of sportsmanship. We emphasise fairness, respect, and the value of collaboration in all sporting activities. Physical activity is incorporated into the daily routine, with a focus on sustained periods of exercise that contribute to children's overall health and wellbeing.

Swimming:
Swimming is an essential part of our curriculum, with the goal for all pupils to be able to swim at least 25 meters by the time they leave primary school.

Impact

Physical Development:
The impact of our PE curriculum is that students develop a broad range of physical skills, increase their knowledge and understanding of sports and fitness, and become physically confident. They will acquire the ability to apply skills across various sports and activities, enjoy participating in physical exercise, and feel motivated to continue these activities beyond school. Through participating in competitive sports, students will learn important life values such as teamwork, fairness, and resilience, which they can apply in all aspects of life.

Health, Fitness, and Mental Wellbeing:
The impact of our PE provision extends to students' overall health, fitness, and mental wellbeing. By engaging in regular physical activity, children develop a healthy lifestyle and learn to make informed choices about their physical and mental health. They understand the importance of physical activity in maintaining both physical and mental wellbeing. The curriculum also encourages lifelong habits of leading an active life, which will positively impact their future.

Swimming Proficiency:
By the end of primary school, we aim for all pupils to be proficient swimmers, able to swim at least 25 meters. This essential life skill will contribute to their overall physical confidence and safety in and around water.
